Megan Wright is a young mezzo soprano from Christchurch. She has been involved in Opera for many years, starting when she was 11 in Canterbury Opera Youth. During her time in COY she played lead roles in productions such as The Happy Prince, Dr Canons Cure and Jam. During work on Jam, Megan was chosen to perform on behalf of Canterbury Opera at the New Zealand Wild Opera Conference in 2002.
When Megan was 14 she began her work in the senior chorus with Canterbury Opera’s 2004 season of Turandot. In the senior chorus Megan was a part of 6 chorus’ as well as training in the chorus for Rusalka. Over her years involved with the senior chorus she gained a small part in Canterbury Opera’s 2005 production Suor Angelica. Also, in 2004, Megan was asked as a special guest artist to perform the role of the Sourceress in COY’s production of Dido and Aeneas in which she received a fantastic review in NZ Opera magazine. Megan performed at various functions during involvement with Canterbury Opera. This is Megan’s second year as a member of the Solid Energy Ensemble of Southern Opera.
Outside of opera, Megan is in her third year of studying to become a primary school teacher at the University of Canterbury. After completing her degree, she hopes to gain a job in a primary school as a music specialist and choir tutor.
