The Music Man - Brian Law to conduct Carmen

, Wednesday, 1 August 2007

The unforgettable music of Bizet’s Carmen is in the hands of Brian Law and the musicians of the Christchurch Symphony. Since he arrived from Canada 16 years ago, Brian Law has significantly influenced the Christchurch musical landscape, primarily with world-class performances by his Christchurch City Choir.

But his talent is also seen in his work with orchestras, operas, youth choirs and the Christchurch Cathedral Choir for which he has been Music Director since August 2004.

Born and educated in London, Brian emigrated to Canada in 1965 where he was music director for the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra and the Ottawa Choral Society. For 13 years he was assistant conductor and chorus master for Festival Ottawa. He has conducted all the major Canadian orchestras, and worked widely in the fields of opera and ballet. Internationally he has conducted orchestras in the USA, Italy and Spain, Egypt, and the BBC Singers in Britain. He has also conducted at large outdoor events such as Opera at the Pyramids in Egypt in 1998 and Opera in the Outback.

Brian has worked with all New Zealand’s regional orchestras, and the NZ Symphony Orchestra both in the Mobil Song Quest and in seasons of ballet for the New Zealand Ballet.
