2009 has seen two very special productions from Southern Opera. 

“Gianni Schicchi” , the comedy opera from Puccini’s trio of masterpieces, “Il trittico”, was a wonderfully funny and masterful production and the reviewers gave full marks to your talented Christchurch singers who joined two old friends of mine, Grant Dickson and Martin Snell.

The “Magic Flute”, Mozart’s wonderfully mysterious opera, seems to have had a very special and magical production from another colleague of mine, Linda Kitchen, with whom I have sung at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden.  I am so happy that she has become a talented director as well as a charming singer!  Looking at photographs of the production I am impressed by the interesting sets and beautiful costumes – this was a triumph for your small, and still quite new, opera company and I am pleased and proud to be its Patron.

At the end of this very successful operatic year I want to wish you a happy Christmas and a peaceful and musical New Year.
